How to do shaft alignment with dial indicator

Aligning shafts using a dial indicator is a common method in mechanical engineering. Here’s a general procedure for performing shaft alignment with a dial indicator:

        1. Preparation:

  • Ensure that the equipment is turned off and completely stationary before starting the alignment process.
  • Make sure the dial indicator and its magnetic base are in good working conditions.
  • Set up the dial indicator and magnetic base on a sturdy surface near the shaft being alignment.

       2.  Initial Positioning:

  • Attach the magnetic base firmly to a stationary part of the machinery near the shaft coupling.
  • Position the dial indicator’s contact tip against the first coupling’s face.
  • The tip should be perpendicular to the coupling face and aligned with the centerline of the shaft.

     3. Establish a Reference:

  • Rotate the shaft by hand to find the position where the indicator reads the highest value (usually referred to as the “12 o’clock” position).
  • Zero the dial indicator at this position by adjusting the bezel or rotating the dial face.

     4. Measurement:

  • Slowly rotate the shaft and observe the dial indicator readings.
  • Note the maximum and minimum values observed as the shaft completes one revolution.
  • These readings indicate the misalignment of the shaft. The goal is to minimize these values.

  5. Adjustments:

  • Based on the readings, determine which direction and how much adjustment is required to bring the shaft into alignment.
  • Make incremental adjustments to the movable machine (such as shimming or adjusting bolts) to correct the misalignment.
  • Recheck the alignment after each adjustment until the desired alignment is achieved.

  6. Final Verification:

  • After completing the adjustments, re-measure the alignment to ensure that the misalignment has been minimized or eliminated.
  • Rotate the shaft multiple times to verify consistent readings and confirm that the alignment is satisfactory.

It’s important to note that this is a simplified overview of the process. Shaft alignment can be a complex task depending on the specific equipment and circumstances involved. It’s recommended to consult alignment manuals, follow manufacturer guidelines, or seek assistance from experienced professionals when performing shaft alignment.
